GYM - Empowering youth to become the best version of themselves…

  • Talitha D

The GYM program had a truly lasting impact on me and my personal growth. Being part of GYM gave me confidence in myself and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. It helped me tremendously with public speaking, allowing me to communicate my ideas clearly. I also became much more comfortable approaching others and building meaningful connections. Through the mentorship and leadership opportunities, I learned how to challenge myself and set higher standards for who I wanted to become. GYM pushed me to grow not only academically, but also as a leader and as a person. Most importantly, it inspired me to continuously pursue becoming the best version of myself and to never give up when things became challenging. I am incredibly grateful for the foundation and support the program provided.

More than seven years ago, I remember my father pressuring me to apply for his colleague's youth success program. While the idea of additional weekend work and commitments pushed me against his suggestions, looking back now, I am beyond grateful that I took a chance to invest in myself and participated in Mallik Uncle's GYM program. Every now and then, I still look back at the journal each of us received on the first day of GYM and read the line Mallik Uncle wrote on the first page: "Wishing you the best becoming the best version of yourself." From Mallik Uncle's weekly lectures and holistic approach to success, I learned to grapple with my previous notions of success as solely academic and ambitious and see success as an embodiment of my best self.

GYM has been an important part of my growth as a student and leader. Mallik Uncle taught me that leading is not about titles or recognition, but about consistency and service to others. Through his Sunday lessons, I was able to learn how to set standards for myself, communicate with others more confidently, and lead deliberately. His analogies and presentations stick to me to this day and I have made an effort to shape certain actions around the principles of GYM. More than anything, GYM helped me build a mindset focused on growth, resilience, and impact which has helped guide me on my path toward excellence in college and life.

Attending  GYM has had a real impact on how I approach school and life. One of my biggest struggles was procrastination, and GYM helped me recognize that habits shape outcomes. Through the sessions and guidance, I learned how to be more disciplined, set goals, and actually follow through on them. This shift didn’t just improve my performance in school—it changed how I see responsibility and leadership in my own life. GYM truly lives up to “Greatness for Youth Minds” by helping students build the mindset needed to grow, lead, and keep improving. I’m really grateful to Mallik Uncle for the lessons and support as I continue into college and beyond.

I joined Leadership GYM as a freshman in high school, and I didn’t realize at the time how much those lessons would stay with me. Ideas like “eat your frogs first” and focusing on becoming the best version of myself helped me push through the stress and pressure of high school. Even when things felt overwhelming, those principles grounded me. Now in college, managing school, work, and life on my own, I still lean on what I learned there to stay focused and balanced. Leadership GYM didn’t just teach me skills, it shaped my mindset and the way I approach growth, responsibility, and leadership every day.

Through the GYM program I have been able to grow academically, serve others socially, and work toward making a meaningful difference within myself and my community. Through the multitude of opportunities and projects that this program has provided, I have grown my mindset to really reflect on who I want to become, not just what I want to achieve. Throughout high school and college, balancing academics, social life, and personal growth felt like a distant ideal, but by using proactive strategies and staying intentional to my goals, it continues to remain achievable. I know I still have much to learn and many challenges ahead, but I am confident that the GYM program has prepared me and given me the confidence for continued growth and future success.

GYM taught me that purpose is not a fixed destination but rather a way of engaging with the world. GYM has shaped how I define leadership and compassion in both my academic and professional paths. It taught me to approach challenging spaces, especially legal and institutional settings, with patience and accountability, recognizing how intimidating these systems can be for marginalized individuals. GYM also helped me understand that the most important part of making a difference is sincerity and consistency. I have grown more confident in using my voice with intention, even when answers are not certain, especially as I aim to pursue a career in advocating for equity and justice. GYM has given me a framework for living deliberately and committing to leadership grounded in compassion.

Leadership GYM has helped me establish a guiding framework for approaching life as a young adult. It has shaped how I set purposeful goals, take responsibility, show compassion, and stand by my values with integrity. Its teachings have provided valuable tools to navigate work, social life, and relationships. The GYM pledge reminds me that meaningful impact comes from consistent, intentional actions, no matter how big or small, and that growth is an ongoing process. Through reflection, discipline, and a commitment to learning, I strive to be better each day and make a positive difference in the areas I am a part of.

I was overwhelmed, overworked, and exhausted. After committing to one to many tasks that I didn’t have the time or energy to attend to, I found myself in a position where my first instinct was to disappear. I dropped from all my activities, failed to tell anyone what was going on, and fell behind in my schoolwork. Having gone through GYM class before, I found myself going through old notes on what we had been taught: active recall, pomodoro technique, miracle morning, affirmations, time quadrants, and more. I slowly started bouncing back once I reimplemented a way in my life I thought I had forgotten. The more I started embedding these valuable methods to live, I created habits, put more accurately: systems. Systems that made my college preparation, my time commitments, and my relationships more meaningful and extraordinary. Leadership GYM has set me in a path towards goals I’m no longer afraid to strive for. Equipped with these techniques that prevent burnout and keep me soaring through my workloads, I’m excited to see how far I can go with the lessons I’ve learned.

Leadership GYM has equipped me with tools that continue to shape both my academic journey and personal growth. I still find myself reflecting on study habits I learned early in the program and revisit concepts like the “relationship bank account” as I build meaningful connections and pursue higher education. Mallik Uncle and Manju Aunty are exceptional mentors who genuinely invest in helping students become their best selves. Their consistent guidance and encouragement creates a space where students feel supported and motivated. The program also offers a supportive peer community that challenges students to grow while fostering a collaborative environment.

Leadership GYM has been a cornerstone of my journey. It provided critical skills like focus and energy management that were absent from my school curriculum. These principles gave me the confidence to lead my chess business and excel in HOSA competitions. Most importantly, the commitment to service has shaped my path toward medicine, inspiring me to volunteer over 400 hours in patient care. Furthermore, the time management strategies, specifically the Pomodoro technique, help me to this day. By structuring my tasks into focused intervals, I can maintain high productivity while avoiding burnout.

How can you move forward without a compass? GYM helped me build mine, and it made the tailwind that pushed me through high school. I still use what I learned often. Self-testing, success imaging, and lessons on accountability and self-control have been crucial to my growth as an individual. More importantly, GYM helped me develop my personal philosophy that growth is never comfortable, but you should allow yourself the time and opportunity to pursue it. That discipline and commitment to uncomfortable growth is how you make a real difference and stand for something. GYM gave me that direction.

Leadership GYM played an important role in shaping who I am today. As I pursued aerospace engineering, moved across the country on my own, and stepped into a highly competitive DoD defense role, the lessons from GYM stayed with me. GYM taught me discipline, self-belief, and the importance of taking ownership of my growth, especially when facing uncertainty or pressure. The mindset and values I developed through GYM helped me adapt quickly, thrive in demanding environments, and stay grounded in my purpose. GYM didn’t just guide my academic path; it prepared me for independence, resilience, and long-term leadership in life.
